There is nothing quite as frustrating as a squeaky bed. Just as you are about to drift off to sleep, you shift your weight, and a loud creak wakes you right back up. A noisy bed not only disrupts your sleep cycle but can also be a nuisance to your partner. The good news? You don’t always need to rush out and buy a new mattress. Often, a squeaky bed is a simple fix.
In this guide, we will walk you through the most effective ways to locate the noise and fix a squeaky bed for good.
Step 1: Locate the Source of the Squeak
Before you can fix the problem, you need to know exactly where the noise is coming from. Is it the mattress itself, the bed frame, or the box spring?

- The Floor Test: Remove your mattress from the bed frame and place it flat on the floor. Roll around on it. If it squeaks, the problem is your mattress.
- Test the Frame: If the mattress is quiet on the floor, apply pressure to different parts of your empty bed frame or foundation. If you hear the noise, your frame is the culprit. (Fun fact: The frame is the source of the squeak about 80% of the time!)
Step 2: How to Silence a Squeaky Bed Frame
If your wooden or metal bed frame is making the noise, try these simple DIY solutions:

- Tighten the Joints: Over time, bolts and screws can loosen due to regular movement. Grab a screwdriver or Allen wrench and tighten every connection on your bed frame.
- Lubricate Metal and Wood: Friction is the main cause of squeaking. If you have a metal frame, apply a lubricant like WD-40 to the joints. For wooden frames, rubbing beeswax, an unlit candle, or a bar of dry soap against the noisy joints works wonders.
- Add Cushioning (Friction Pads): Sometimes, the mattress rubs directly against the wooden slats. You can eliminate this noise by placing an old blanket, a thin yoga mat, or anti-slip furniture pads between the mattress and the slats.
- Check the Legs: If your bed frame is scraping against a hardwood floor, place felt furniture pads under the bed’s legs to absorb the movement and sound.
Step 3: What to Do If Your Mattress is Squeaking
If you did the floor test and realized the noise is coming from inside the mattress, it usually means the metal coils are rubbing together or losing their tension.

- Rotate or Flip the Mattress: We tend to sleep in the exact same spot every night, which wears down specific coils. Rotating your mattress 180 degrees (or flipping it, if it’s double-sided) redistributes the weight and can temporarily stop the noise.
- Check the Foundation: Make sure your bed slats are flat and evenly spaced. If a slat is broken or missing, the mattress will sag into the gap, causing the springs to bend awkwardly and squeak.
When Is It Time for a New Mattress?
If your mattress is over 7 to 10 years old and features traditional innersprings (like Bonnell coils), the metal coils inside may be rusted, bent, or completely worn out. In this case, no amount of rotating will fix the squeak. It is a clear sign that the mattress can no longer support your spine properly.
If you are tired of waking up to creaks and groans, it might be time to upgrade to a high-quality pocket coil mattress or memory foam hybrid that guarantees motion isolation and a silent night.
